Just Breathe...

Oxygen to your brain is important for cognitive ability. It’s important to breath during your run. This may sound like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people hold their breath during their run. Some of you may be doing this without even really realizing it. Anxiety or stress (which many barrel racers can feel prior to their run) can involuntarily cause some folks to hold their breath or take their breathing pattern much shallower. This in turn negatively effects your cognitive ability. This can effect reaction time. Here’s an article that explains this in a much more science-y manner. In a sport measured to the thousand of a second, that can be a big problem.

Luckily, there’s an easy little trick that you can use to make sure you JUST BREATHE...

As you enter the alley to start your run, quietly sing or hum to yourself. It’s that simple. Not a a complicated song that you have to really think about. Something easy. Something you know without thinking. If you’re humming or singing, you can’t hold your breath. If you’re not holding your breath, you’ll better have your mental facilities and be able to think better during your run. Sure, it seems simple, but it’s also something that’s easy to take for granted.

Life is short. Ride a Unicorn!
